SRU student exploring geometric manifolds as part of grant-funded project

In addition to his job as a chef at a local restaurant, Elijah Saesan is cooking up some geometric manifolds as a student researcher at Slippery Rock University this summer. A junior mathematics major from Rice's Landing, south of Pittsburgh, Saesan is working closely with Kirk McDermott, assistant professor of mathematics and statistics, on a faculty-student research project funded by SRU's Summer Collaborative Research Experience grant program, which helps introduce undergraduate students to the world of academic research. Instead of working with ingredients in a kitchen, Saesan is plotting graphs on paper and analyzing parameters with the help of computational software. This helps him find new examples of three-dimensional manifolds creating hyperbolic geometry. In mathematics, manifolds are topological spaces, and they are more difficult to visualize than, say, a dinner recipe.

SRU student traces local history of settlements for former slaves

Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States and the anniversary of the news reaching Texas on June 19, 1865. But refuge and freedom from bondage was realized for many former slaves who reached Pennsylvania decades prior on stops along what is known as the Underground Railroad. A Slippery Rock University student heard about such settlements in his community and decided to investigate further for a research paper that became more than just a class assignment. Stone Helsel, a junior secondary education: social studies major from Mercer, conducted research about two settlements in Mercer County in a way that was similar to a historian or doctoral student's scholarly pursuit: delving into local archives, visiting physical sites and even checking his work with experts as sort of a peer-review process.

SRU chemistry researchers studying ways to fight bacterial infections

Those who use medicine to treat high blood pressure must be aware of the harmful side effects. Researchers at Slippery Rock University, however, are using one type of blood pressure medication for its beneficial side effects. They aren't ingesting the drug but rather creating compounds with it that could treat completely different ailments such as bacterial infections. A faculty-student research team in SRU's Chemistry Department recently identified an opportunity to find different types of antimicrobial agents after they decided to expand upon other scientists' research about the drug hydralazine.

SRU students research cultural context in music education

Awareness of culture and context are important in any classroom, but they particularly need to be assessed by music educators who might consider incorporating anything from Beethoven to Beyonce in their programming. Faculty-student research projects at Slippery Rock University are examining the social and emotional aspects of music education, as well as the differences between types of school districts for which programming is implemented.

SRU researchers exploring low-cost, additive manufacturing process

There are many ways to ease the ongoing stress to the world's supply chain, and one way is by developing better manufacturing techniques, especially ones that can be used by small businesses. A faculty-student research team at Slippery Rock University is working on a project using a conveyor belt 3D printer in a process known as additive manufacturing. Using computer-aided-design software and a 3D printer, the additive manufacturing process deposits layers of materials in precise geometric shapes to create an object, rather than traditional means of subtractive manufacturing, such as metal cutting, wood carving or plastic shaping.

SRU faculty-student team studies lack of access to pre-K programs

Pre-kindergarten programs such as preschool, day care and Head Start are critical to a child's development. Michelle Amodei, a Slippery Rock University associate professor of elementary education and early childhood, has been studying this aspect of early childhood development for years. And when administrators at Grove City Area School District approached Amodei with concerns of lack of participation in pre-K programs by their students, she offered to take up a research project with the help of one of her students who graduated from Grove City Area.

SRU engineering students build and program robots for engaging class project

Students in an electrical engineering class at Slippery Rock University are becoming less robotic in their learning by building robots from scratch. A semester-long project that combines several skills could have involved memorizing inputs and outputs of circuitry and computer code to program robots, but humans learning differently. A better approach is through competition and hands-on experiences.

SRU cadets fly in Black Hawk helicopters from campus to field training exercise

On a typical Thursday morning, Asher Myers would be sitting in his Principles of Industrial Hygiene class at Slippery Rock University. But on March 24, Myers and 20 other junior cadets from SRU's Army ROTC unit found themselves in a very different type of classroom: strapped inside a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, 2,500 feet above campus. . Four Black Hawks departed SRU's campus from the intramural practice fields along Harmony Road, carrying cadets to their Combined Field Training Exercise, or CFTX, at Camp Garfield Joint Military Training Center in Ravenna, Ohio, where they met up with other ROTC units from the region. But the Frontier Battalion, which consists of cadets from SRU and Clarion University, was the only unit to make an entrance on Black Hawks.

Just like on the reality television show "Dancing with the Stars," where celebrities learn to dance and compete with one another while partnered with a professional dancer, there's a similar event at Slippery Rock University. "Dancing with the SRU Stars" is an annual fundraising event hosted by the National Honors Society for Dance Arts' SRU chapter. The event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased online, $10 for general admission and $5 for students. SRU exercise science researchers conducting biomechanics study of the plank hold

Studying the plank is a much better fate than walking the plank, as exercise science students at Slippery Rock University can attest. The plank hold is a popular strength exercise comparable to the pushup or situp for its simplicity and use of a person's body weight. Planks are done in a pushup position but instead of moving up and down, a person holds their body for a duration of time while keeping their forearms on the ground. It's something that a faculty-student research team at SRU is studying by comparing the plank to other types of exercises that engage the core muscles.
